A Collaborative Institutional Repository for BC: needs analysis & a concept committee

December 2012

The May 2012 BC ELN Connect featured an article on existing Institutional Repositories in British Columbia http://eln.bc.ca/newsletter/201204/article.html, a first step in achieving Strategy 3.2 of the BC ELN 2011 – 2016 Strategic Plan, which calls for BC ELN to “articulate and implement an appropriate role for BC ELN in managing open access archives…and supporting adoption by BC ELN partners.

In summer of 2012 BC ELN partner libraries were asked to respond to an Institutional Repository Needs Assessment Survey.  The response rate was fantastic – all partners responded, many taking the time to provide very detailed comments. Thanks, everyone!

Results of the survey demonstrate that there is strong need for a institutional repository development at post-secondary libraries in British Columbia. A collaborative approach is worth exploring, as this may potentially result in cost savings and efficiencies through sharing of expertise. Local institutional branding jumps out even at this early stage as a “must-have” for this project to succeed.

Detailed responses suggest the desirability of a phased approach. 12 libraries rated their potential level of interest in a collaborative IR as 8/10 or higher. 6 libraries have definite intentions to develop an institutional repository in the very near future. Other libraries, including libraries with an existing IR, indicated that they may be potentially interested in joining a collaborative IR approach at a later date.

The first phase is a Concept Committee tasked with exploring the possibility of moving forward with a collaborative IR for the libraries that intend to implement an IR in the near future. This group has been formed and had a first teleconference to explore the question” What are we all doing here…”.  Many thanks to the volunteers of the IR committee:
